Opera of choice?

We have tickets to see Des Moines Metro Opera's production of Verdi's Otello next Wednesday evening, which I'd heard referred to as a "perfect opera". This was on a radio interview between the (radio) host and Robert Larsen, the director of DMMO (and beloved friend and colleague to Dave and I). I'm not sure what they meant by "perfect"--perhaps in terms of form and orchestration? Regardless, I'm ashamed to say I've never heard or seen this opera before. The other summer festival operas are Carmen (in which I've played, and I've seen it), and Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, which I'm also interested in seeing. We just can't afford more than one. Verdi it is! I'm really looking forward to it!

Originally we were going to go on Saturday, which is our 6-year anniversary. The performance is sold out though, so we got tickets for next week instead. Reflecting upon this turn of fate, it's probably a good idea the tickets were sold out for Saturday. Maybe a couple shouldn't celebrate their anniversary to this particular plot. Iago plants suspicion in Otello's mind and turns him against his faithful wife. Want to know how it ends? So we'll spend our anniversary having a nice meal in Des Moines, and we'll save the heartache for Wednesday.

I've never seen nor heard Otello either, so there you go. You are not alone. Have fun at the opera!

And a very happy anniversary to you and Dave!
